Taking (back) Care
A Workshop on Curating and Care
Expressions of interest are sought for participants in a one-day workshop on curatorial habits of care led by Helena Reckitt & Christine Shaw. In echo with the exhibition Take Care, the workshop will explore the textures of curatorial care, and lack of care, in an art sector where many involved feel under-valued and uncared for.
Drawing on their own experiences of the visual art field, and guided through writing, reading and listening exercises, participants will aim to generate propositions for creating frameworks that foster curatorial care, mutual aid, and collective political practices to push back against prevailing extractivist attitudes which treat care, like nature, as a free, infinite resource.
The workshop would suit those who have an interest in cultural labour, of the politics of self and collective care, and caring practices, ecologies, and constituencies. Curator and writer Helena Reckitt and curator Christine Shaw will lead the workshop, as part of the exhibition Take Care on view at La Ferme du Buisson (March 3–July 21, 2019).
Suggested readings on curatorial labour, creative survival, ethical relationality, interdependency, pirate care, and rematriation will be circulated to participants in advance. Contributions to potluck vegan meals will be encouraged.

Helena Reckitt
Helena Reckitt is a curator and writer with a longstanding interest in legacies of feminist and queer art, thinking and collectivity, currently Reader in the Art Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is consultant editor for the 2019 book The Art of Feminism: The Images that Shaped the Fight for Equality (Chronicle Book and Tate Publishing). She curated the 2017 exhibition Habits of Care as part of Take Care at Blackwood Gallery, Canada. In 2015 Reckitt initiated the Feminist Duration Reading Group, which explores under-known feminisms outside the Anglo-American canon in a spirit of collective enquiry. Meeting each month, members of the FDRG Working Group have organised meetings throughout the UK in Penzance, Birmingham, and Bexhill-on-Sea, and in London at SPACE, Mimosa House, Swiss Church, Barbican Art Centre, and AntiUniversity. In June 2019 the group begins a year-long residency at the South London Gallery.
Christine Shaw
Christine Shaw is Director/Curator of the Blackwood Gallery and Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her programming direction takes a critical stance on social, political, and ecological urgencies, sets out to develop durable visual-cultural literacies, and invites publics to create new encounters in the common struggle for a future. Her commitment to curatorial experimentation, collective cognition, and social resilience has been applied to long-term collaborative projects including I stood before the source, a group exhibition traversing various scenes of capitalist accumulation (2016); The Cage is a Stage, a five-part performance and exhibition project on human-animal-non-human relations with Emily Mast at the Blackwood Gallery and The Power Plant (2016); Take Care at Blackwood Gallery (2017–2018) and La Ferme du Buisson (2019); and The Work of Wind: Air, Land, Sea (2018-20), a two-year curatorial and editorial series designed to open perspectives on climate change, environmental violence, and resilience.
